It was a conditional pass for my qualifying exam...meaning that i have to correct the proposal which i submited earlier. Due to time constrain and tension, most of us simply submited the written proposal before the dateline, and aiming for good presentation during the exam day. Actually presentation is more important than what you wrote, because they will not going to read your proposal, they will wait until the day you present your non-thesis proposal. They will only read on the spot when they have doubt on what you say. My flow of presentation was far more better than what is written in the proposal. I was asked to give a revised proposal in 2 weeks time.
After passing the exam, Empress was away to Berlin for two weeks. I went to Hualien with lab mates, Lugang and Taipei tour with friends. Of course i did go to lab as usual doing cloning. So till the last three days, only really sit down to work on the proposal... so bad...
By closing one eyes, quickly do the correction according to what is in my presentation slides, and submited on the last day.
Dr.Tsay has read my proposal and commented i didn't get what they mean.
The evidence of my first hypothesis was weak, even though it sounds logic. She hopes i could write a better one, but then she said it's okay. So i don't have to do anything. Passed!!! Yeah!!!
Aiya.., passed already, the rest is not important anymore... ;p
I was elected as the student representative of MCB by Jessica, since no one has been nominated. I took this as a volunteery work to ease the burden of Jessica and Linda. It is indeed an honour to have this opportunity to learn and gain this extra-curricula experience during my stay in IMB. Perhaps it will sharpen my soft skill and personality which are essential in the future working environment. Hopefully it will not cause a lot of problem for me, the most important concern is that it will not affect the progress of my labwork. Just representing MCB, not the whole TIGP, that one will give way to others.
Today is the opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olmypic Games...

Hammerhead ribozyme
...a small self-cleavage RNA with a conserved motif
...is not a true enzyme in its natural state (so it cannot catalyse multiple turnover)
...the cleavage is autocatalytic
...in the absence of protein enzymes
It works in our experimental design!!! Yeah! ...that's for empress's talk.
We came out with the idea during discussion and she was font to design the experiment and asked me to do it within a month. Luckily it works! ^^
I am still working my poster.
A big thank you to senior HZS for guiding me all the way doing the experiments. I was totally new in this area.

IMB Year End Dinner

Today is the annual Year-End Dinner 尾牙 for IMB. The food served in this year is better than last year, and the performance was really spectacular comparable to last year. Those PIs, assistants, staffs and students can really do good performance.., they can sing, dance, act and do research at the same time...
Jessica and Linda danced gracefully... ;p
Our lab members are really lucky, Chin Huey got a chocolate whereas Frank and I both won the cash prices of NT2000 and NT5000, respectively during the lucky draw!!! Yeah!!
The "secret" mentioned in "The Secret" really works!!!
Hmmm.., i got to continue with my lab work.

Yesterday was burning the midnight oil to finish the 3 assignments...
I was chatting and the progression was very slow at the beginning...
Actually thank to Prafulla explaining the Aurora paper to me, even though we are not very understood, but at least the notes you have made really helps me to finish the paper commenting, not to say i follow the paper... Your friend Sanjiv keep on asking me everyday about the paper, i haven't read and his appearance like telling me that i would be in trouble if not yet read the paper...:s Asked him to write whatever he understand, he wrote it but still want to know the true story... Why bother to know...?? So recently when i saw him in the kitchen or lobby while watching my TV programme, i'll be pretending not seeing him and say to myself "Don't come to talk to me, don't come to talk to me...please..." Ok, finally of course he is coming over and say, "Hi Pak, do you....." Ah.., why asking me.., ask other people ma... If other people also cannot give you the answer, that means they haven't read the paper yet, so you should "sik do" la.... Anyway, i'll try to be nice and smile while talking to him.., giving him short answer so that he have nothing to ask back... So mean...
So finally i get the print out and submited to the office... Can't imagine i'm the first one to submit.., Prafulla also finished but she didn't print out yet. We were in IMB for the whole night yesterday; she was in the lab and i was in the computer room.
Morning go back to sleep and came to see Dr. Wu in the afternoon... She assigned me to a senior in the lab, and he should be taking care of me during my lab rotation... Baby-sitting for a new student is not a good job.., anyway i'll try to catch-up everything... Long time didn't do lab jor...
So now finished everything already.., so can focus on lab rotation...

Time really flies.., let's have a retro for what i have done in the year 2006...
Writing-up for thesis, correcting drafts...
Worked for CEBAR, involved in administration work, doing posters, and involved in promotion exhibitions. It's a good experience to know the what the public think of biotechnology and to deliver the message on biotech contribution to the society. Submitted my thesis for examination, finally after so many months...
Doing book translation, English to Chinese for two books... "How to Earn US Dollar in Your Pajamas" and "Pensonic", the latter is not on shelf yet... A good accomplishment for me (thanks to Adrian of Kanyin) and a good try... However, not becoming rich as no royalty for me... :p
Still a part-time patent drafter for a company (Thanks to Cheong Yee)... Got to now that actually to patent a stuffs is not that difficult, just have to follow the rules and depends what aspect you want to patent something... So consider earning some extra money to support living expenses...
Applied for TIGP, passed the interview through skype and got the offer... No GRE is required and TOEFL requirement has been waived (Thanks Jessica and DNA)...
Applied for Monbusho Scholarship, passed the English proficiency test and got the interview, but didn't turn up as decided to go Academia Sinica to damaging my head permanently... (I should write DNA's name on my answer sheet..:p)
As one of the organising committee of International Symposium on Molecular Farming in Plants 2006 (ISMFP 2006), successfully organised in June 2006. Get to know the how capability a secretary is, lots of things to be done and accomplished.., luckily Norul, Tengku and Huei Wearn are there... Always "serba-boleh", and got a "Amoi" during lucky draw (Thanks to Prof. Yasmin)...
Thesis examiner reports came in, only minor correction need to be done. Finished binding and "fight" for the dateline to attend convocation...
Finally convocation on 9th August 2006 in University Malaya, and received the scroll from Dr. Raja Nazrin Shah, prince of Perak State. Many thanks to those attending my convocation, and thanks for the gifts...
Prepared for leaving, busy with packing luggage, sending stuffs back hometown, discarding unused stuffs, farewell with friends and stay with family...
Really appreciate all my friends and family who are always with me, you are wonderful!! Thank you very much! (Too many to list...)
Leaving Malaysia, went to Singapore then flied to Taiwan... Leaving my cactus with Win Cheong and Michelle... Thanks to Fe Lex, Francis, Kar Woh and Prof. Wong for hosting everything...
Starting the life as a new foreign student in Academia Sinica, Institute of Molecular Biology... Started from zero and knowing new friends.., survived and adapted well as culture and language not much different from Malaysia...
Attending classes and seminars, doing assignment, studying, loitering, dreaming, blogging and etc... Went to Guess Guess Guess studio, really great experience! (Don't worry Chuen Yi, i'll bring you and Chee How there when you in Taiwan next time...) Of course do visiting around Taipei with friends from Malaysia...
Actually Academia Sinica is a good place for doing research, all the facilities and environment and very encouraging.., make TIGP as one of your choice to permanently damaging your head.
Won an iPod Video, very very lucky! Thanks to Agilent Technologies...
Prepared for mid term exam and seminar, but now, final exam.., good luck!
(I was very lazy to do exercise, but then now i'll exercise at lease 3 times in a week, consider a change for me...)

Today is Winter Festival... Happy Dong Zhi!
We were having a Christmas and Winter Party at IMB this afternoon.., there were flea market, wedding celebration for our senior, tang yuan DIY and auction...

It was a special day as today is Dong Zhi and the last Friday before Christmas.
There were also another ceremony held at the TIGP student dormitory. It's TIGP Certificate Conferral Ceremony. It was a historical event as a first TIGP student has graduated. He has published 7 papers in 3.5 years of his study!! :s So geng...
