Weekend 15th December 2007

Three of us, Seok Kooi, Frank and I went to Taipei Xinyi District (台北信義區) near the Taipei 101 for dinner on Saturday night. This are the pictures we took along the way. The street was crowded and the weather was nice with cool breeze.

After having our dinner at KFC in Taipei 101, we went to the Shin Kong Mitskoshi for the Star Wars 30th Anniversary Exhibition.
There were a lot of models exhibited in the exhibition centre. Those Star Wars fans would be very excited as all the models characters and spacecraft were displayed, including the sword. There were Star Wars models of Lego, it was indeed very impressive. Although Frank is one of the Star Trek fans, almost everything regarding Star Wars is in his fingertips... ^^

After finished the exhibition, we were wandering around the shopping area outside. Suddenly something caught our attention, a talented sketch artist. Wow, we saw him drawing very well for his customers. Hey, those three little girls sketch were looked like photo-taking pictures. So we decided to let him drew some character drawings for us. Only NT100 for one piece, consider cheap la... I felt akward as sitting there doingnothing for long, and there were many people gathered around admiring his drawing skill.

Hmmm..., do i looked like the person in the sketch? Almost 10 years younger right?? ^^ Hehe...
Below is the sketches for three of us...

A half-day trip to Jiufen

Today, we went to Jiufen 九份 for a half-day trip...
How dare were we doing that since our PI is not available... Haha... Actually all PIs in IMB are not available since Wednesday as they are in Hualien for the IMB Annual Retreat. That would be their research progress session, everyone was busy and tension since last week.

Pam drove us there and five of us arrived at Jiufen around 2 o'clock. It was crowded even though the weather in Jiufen was cold and rainy today.

Some snap shots of Jiufen old street

We didn't eat this, just take pictures as it looked delicious. ^^

We had our lunch there... The taste is good, they said this dish should be originated from Changhua 彰化, a bit different to those meat ball 肉丸 i had in Taipei... The filling is like char-siew 叉燒 (red pork), but i don't like the starchy coat...

Remember the award-winning cartoon "Spirited Away 千と千尋の神隠し" by Ghibli's Studio, Hayao Miyazaki got his inpiration from here many years ago. The buildings and surrounding in the cartoon looked similar to Jiufen. Very Japanese style of architectures everywhere.

We also tried "Ah-Lan flour cake, yam cake" 阿蘭的草仔粿, 芋粿 (aiya, i don't know how to translate la...). It was very nice!
The yam dessert 芋圓 is a must-have dish when you visited Jiufen. We had the yam desert while looking at the beautiful scenery of Jiufen and North-East Taiwan.

Beautiful scenery.

This lady selling saussage was friendly and funny.

We came back before 6pm to our lab. What a nice trip!

Thesis Supervisor Advisor Meanings Joke

Thesis Supervisor Advisor Meanings Joke from Molecular Station...
Just for laugh... Hahaha...

LANGUAGE USED BY THESIS ADVISORS - Made Simple For Graduate Students ^^

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Look at this as a learning experience....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: You're going to suffer...

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Let me explain the format of the defense.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: Let me make you even more nervous.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: I'm here to lend you support.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I'm here to destroy you so you won't look smarter than me.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: I found the overall concept interesting.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: This is my token compliment before ripping your idea to shreds....

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: I would like to have had more time to study this.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I didn't read it.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: I have some concerns about the theory upon which your study is based.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I hate the theory, but I can't insult the author so I'll insult your work instead.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: There are some aspects of the study that I would like to hear more about.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I read it but I just don't remember anything about it.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: There are some aspects of the study that I would like to hear more about.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I read it but I just don't remember anything about it.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Your hypotheses are not strongly enough linked to the existing literature.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: You came up with an innovative idea and I want to make sure you never do it again.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Your research is an interesting extension of my own work.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: Why didn't I think of this before you did?

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: You have failed to take into account some of the more relevant literature.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: You failed to cite me.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: I would like you to explain......
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I don't know anything about this stuff so you'll have to explain it to me.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Your statistical results don't seem to support your hypothesis.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I don't understand statistics.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Your selection of statistical tests is rather simplistic.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I'm the only one here that understands statistics and I wanted to rub it in.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: How did you ensure that you had drawn a random sample? ....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR MEANS: I had to come up with at least one question and this one always works.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: This is a great topic for your thesis....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: This is some grunge work that will help me get tenure.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Your funding is secure.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: Maybe.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Your funding is probably OK.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: Start worrying.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: I'll see what we can do about funding.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: Start looking for another advisor.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Let's wrap this up.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I'm hungry.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Write another chapter.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR MEANS: Write another chapter.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Think of this as an investment in skills that will be useful to you in your later career.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: We're going to exploit you to the gills.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Don't listen to XYZ, just listen to me.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: Both XYZ and I are fools, but I'm funding you.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: You will be ready to write up soon, but need to do just one more experiment/program/chip.....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: You have now become a useful slave, and I am not about to let you graduate without doing more footwork for me.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Could you step out of the room while the committee comes to a decision?....
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: We decided beforehand to give you your degree, but we still want to make you sweat some more.

WHAT YOUR ADVISOR SAYS: Its been a pleasure having you........
WHAT YOUR ADVISOR REALLY MEANS: I loved the free Peon work you did, however you are no longer an asset. Get your stuff off your bench ASAP. Next...

This is just for laugh, if there is any identicalness, is merely coincidence.., it does not referring you...

Sandiaoling one-day trip

It was an enjoyable outdoor activity although it is tiring. Bryan woke up in the morning and have be prepared for the hiking for today. He departed from Nangang Railway Station and met with his friends in the train cabin leading to Sandiaoling 三貂嶺 for their hiking activity today.

When they arrived at the station, it was apparently an out skirted area. No shops are available around the area, no wonder everyone was asked to bring their own lunch. Bryan just brought with him some breads and dried bean curt.

Arriving at Sandiaoling Railway Station... Aaron and Dayou

They enjoyed the scenery along their journey, and it was like doing jungle tracking. There were some streams and slope area along the trail, so everyone had to take some precaution steps to avoid from getting wet while crossing the streams and to prevent from falling down due to imbalance.

Nice scenery along the way...

With 哲民 near the waterfall.., don't know why we wore same colour shirt... ^^

The ladder on the slope was the highlight of today's hiking. The stairs are hanging on the slope, and they have to climb up the stairs holding on the rope beside. It might be scary for some people, but Bryan found that it would be easier by holding to the staircase itself while ascending. Finally they reached at a waterfall area where they had their lunch.
Don't try to find Bryan, he is not in the picture... :p

Taken at another staircase with Aaron.

At the origin of waterfall...

Next, they continued they journey on the tracking trail heading to Xinliao 新寮. After having some rest, they continued walking to the Dahua 大華 Railway station.
Group picture.

Final stop at Dahua station, on the way back...

They were chatting while waiting for the train. The train was crowded as everyone were on their way to Ruifang 瑞芳to change train heading to Keelung 基隆 or Taipei 台北.
Although it was tiring, it was indeed an enjoyable and adventurous outdoor activity.
