Slides Preparation

The empress was asing me how was my preparation for the slides...
Apparently her friend (one of the examiners) told her that my proposal was too dry, not exciting at all... He ask her whether i consulted her on making the proposal or not, she said no. Why not? I don't know... Wow...
So today i went to discuss with her on my experimental design and approach... And of course she didn't like it. According to her, it has no value and meaningless to do so.
He is my friend, he came to tell me this and hope that you can do well...
Oh, thank you very much!
Since no modification can be done on the study approach as i have already submitted my proposal, so she gave me some suggestions to modify the experimental design.
So i have to make use of the mutants and compare with the wild type, compare them!
Apply some functional assays to test the hypotheses.
And of course some backup plans...
Many thanks for the suggestions. ^^
Those examiners like to ask:
What if u didn't get anything? what if they didn't work? what if bla bla bla... and we have to tell them our backup plans to shut their mouth off.
We have to predict some outcome of our results...
Why you think it should be like this not like that? Are you sure? Papers said so...
Then why they say so, what experiments they've conducted leading to such conclusion? Hohhh.., you didn't read in detail...
Why you only do one approach? Why not a few? What if this approach doesn't work?
...Because i don't want to think so much, because i didn't read enough material,... giving some reasons which we think are reasonable ...and finally saying i just want to pass. Simple and straight forward approach does not mean no good ma... Do you think i can say so..??!! Of course in a diplomatic way lah...
If you get this gene, what would you do next? Ok, what's next? Then, what's next?...
Never ending "what's next" after you answer their questions... ahhhh... if you think i am that great, then i will be sitting there listening to your presentation... sometimes we just don't know the answer ma...
My feeling is:
It is depends on those examiners whether they want to pass you or not... if they have the perceptions of your proposal is not good, they don't like your approach, they think what you proposed is not interesting, they think you are not good enough, or for whatever reason it is.., then you will be having difficult time during your presentation. How are you going to convince five of them making at least four of them to say "you passed"? I am trying to do so.
Five of them are the experts in the related field, how a student can compete with their experience and knowledge? If we can do so, then they can be replaced easily. If you think we are up to your expectation, please pass us, we just want to pass...
If all of us failed, then this badge will have no more students. Later people might ask why 2006 you all didn't recruit any student ah? No lah, because they all failed their QE... Wah, like that next year no one want to apply for TIGP jor... FYI, we heard that none of them in MM program passed their QE this year, most of them just having conditional pass... What happened??!!
However, this is very subjective, and some of them might be bias and the outcome can be due to a lot of unknown factors.
Whatever it is, just take this as a good learning process and training experience. We just want to pass and get over from all these pressures...
Good luck to all my friends!
Wait for my good news telling you all: "Hey, i've passed!!!" ^^
